61194 Mercury delay line 'coffin', interior

Description of Photograph

Photograph of the interior of one of the LEO I 'coffins', housing the mercury delay lines. The short, one-word delay lines are on the left, and the longer delay lines on the right.

This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation, p82.

Research comments: This photograph shows two of LEO I's five batteries of delay lines in a 'coffin' - a thermally lagged enclosure held under the false floor of the LEO room. Each battery held 16 long delay lines filled with mercury. The delay lines are LEO's 'memory' and will provide 2 Kilobytes of store. The photograph shows short one word delay lines (bottom) and the longer delay lines (top). (CM/LM)
