61294 Ferranti Paper Tape Reader (c1953)

Description of Photograph

Close-up photograph (original print) of an operator threading tape into the Ferranti 5-hole paper tape reader used on LEO I.  Caption on the reverse reads: 'Reader number 1 was Action 20, Reader number 2 (just showing) was Action 23'.

The photograph was taken by Leo Fantl, one of the programmers in the original LEO team and also a keen amateur photographer.

Published in Bird, Peter  LEO - The First Business Computer  (Wokingham: Hasler, 1994), plate 25.

The caption written on the back of the print is in LEO historian Peter Bird's handwriting, indicating the Fantl prints were originally from his collection but were at some point separated before they were given to the archive.
