NASA launches the Hubble Space Telescope

At launch, the Hubble telescope used a DF-224 system, from Rockwell Autonetics. This system contained three redundant CPUs to withstand the effects of gamma radiation and cosmic rays.

Servicing Mission 1, launched in December 1993, augmented the original DF-224 system with two redundant Intel-based 80386 processors.

Servicing Mission 3A, launched in December 1999, replaced the entire system with an Intel 80486-based computer.
