Launch title for the original PlayStation, that along with Wipeout was a big reason for the immediate success of the machine.

The game was a huge success in the arcades of the day, and to have a home version so close in both graphics and sound, and with all the speed and excitement of the original, the home version was tuned to the PlayStation pad, and Namco's own Neg Con analogue controller, and played to near perfection, even only having two tracks did not hold it back, as players spent hours shaving tenths of a second from their top times.

A Ridge Racer game would launch with both the PlayStation 2 and 3 consoles, and also their Sony's PlayStation portable and PS Vita.
