This game quickly became the killer app for the CD-ROM format, for the first time showing that it was worth putting a drive into the PC. Such was the risk of creating the game that when the authors pitched it to their bosses at Virgin, they were ‘fired’ with Virgin setting them up in a new company called Trilobyte. If the game succeeded, Virgin would have the publishing rights, with far less risk involved. A success the game was, with 2 million copies sold, the game was a new standard in multimedia software, with full motion video being a key part of the gameplay, and in a short space of time, the CD-ROM was an integral part of the PC.
