A file of assorted papers from the personal affects of Mavis Hinds.

Mavis Hinds worked for the Meteorological Office and used LEO I for weather forecasting – the earliest use of computers for modelling the weather in the early 1950s. She became an expert in writing, running and correcting computer programs for weather forecasting. She was seen at that time as one of the first prominent female meteorologists and also the first to play a leading role in the development of Numerical Weather Prediction, not only in the UK but also worldwide. 

The Royal Meteorological Society published an Obituary for Mavis Hinds in their journal Weather (vol 64, no. 10) in September 2009. https://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/50932/Mavis-Hinds/

The file is comprised of:

  • 30 unpunched punch cards of various colours
  • A reprint of 'Computer Story' by Mavis K. Hinds originally printed from the Meteorological Magazine, Vol. 110, 1981, pp. 69-81
  • A bundle of New Master code printouts
  • A compliment slip from the National Archive for the History of Computing acknowledging the receipt of the Computer Story reprint
  • A letter from Peter Bird to Mavis Hind relating to his book LEO: The First Business Computer
