The Archimedes 540 (A540) was released by Acorn in 1990, and was launched as the flagship of the Archimedes range. It was the first Acorn computer to be fitted with the new ARM3 processor as standard. It came with 4MB as standard, but was the only Acorn computer which could be expanded to 16MB. Unlike the rest of the Archimedes range it had a SCSI podule as standard and a 100MB hard disc. When launched it ran RISC OS 2.01.

When released, Acorn announced that a new ARM-FPA (floating point podule) would be released later in the year. However it was greatly delayed and was not released until 1993.

This computer in our collection has three of the four podule slots in use with an Acorn AEH50 Ethernet II card, AKA32 SCSI podule, and the Wild Vision/Computer Concepts 215B Colour Card Issue 2.0.
