Manufacturer: Acorn Computers Ltd. Date; 1983-1985 Category: Home Computer / Educational Microcomputer The Acorn Electron was a home computer introduced in 1983 by Acorn Computers Ltd., designed as a more affordable companion to the highly successful BBC Micro. While sharing much of the BBC Micro's architecture and software compatibility, the Electron was engineered as a cost-reduced model aimed at the home market and younger users. Powered by MOS Technology 6502A processor running at approximately 2 MHz and supplied with 32 KB of RAM, the Electron supported Acorn's BBC Basic programming language and could run a large portion of the BBC Micro software library. The machine connected to domestic televisions via UHF and loaded programs primarily from cassette tape, reflecting the standard home computing setup of the early 1980s. The Electron featured a compact integrated keyboard and a distinctive grid-patterned panel, making it visually consistent with Acorn's design language of the period. Although initial production challenges limited early availability, the Electron became a popular entry-level machine and played an important role in introducing computing to UK households during the 1980s home computer boom. Today, the Acorn Electron ins remembered as a significant British home computer that broadened access to programming and educational software, contributing to a generation of users who developed early digital literacy during the formative years of personal computing.
