The KIM-1 (Keyboard Input Monitor) was one of the earliest affordable single-board microcomputers, introduced in 1976 by MOS Technology. Designed around the MOS 6502 microprocessor, the KIM-1 provided engineers, hobbyists, and early computer enthusiasts with a low-cost platform for learning programming and developing software.

Unlike later personal computers, the KIM-1 was supplied as a bare circuit board with integrated keypad and LED display, requiring users to interact directly with memory and machine code. Programs were entered using hexadecimal input via keyboard, and output was displayed on six seven-segment LED displays. Storage was typically achieved using cassette tape interfaces, reflecting the limitations and ingenuity of early microcomputing systems.

The KIM-1 played a crucial role in the development of personal computing, influencing later systems such as Apple I, Commodore PET, and BBC Micro, all of which utilized the 6502 processor. It represents a formative stage in computing history, which machines transitioned from specialist laboratory equipment to accessible tools for individual users.

This is a modern-day reproduction of the KIM-1 board, designed and built by David Williams (Devilish Designs).
