Z80 at 50! Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th July 2026

Join us in celebrating a monumental milestone in computing history: the 50th Anniversary of the Zilog Z80 microprocessor!

We will be looking into our collection and charting the popular, the weird and wonderful systems that feature this milestone CPU with an interactive display.

When: Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th July 2026
Where: The Centre for Computing History, Cambridge, U.K

Born from the minds of Federico Faggin, Ralph Ungermann and Masatoshi Shima after they left Intel, the goal of the Z80 was to create a chip that was compatible with the Intel 8080 but was simpler and easier for engineers to implement.  They succeeded - officially launched in July 1976, the Z80 was one of the most popular CPUs of the age and helped power the first wave of home computers and arcade legends.

Notable machines featuring the Z80 from all over the world:
  • Exidy Sorcerer
  • The Superbrain
  • The Sharp MZ series
  • NEC PC 6001
  • Sinclair ZX80, ZX81 and Spectrum computers
  • Sega Master System and GameGear
  • Namco Pac-Man arcade machine

... and many, many more!

If you've got something unique involving a Z80 whether old or new you'd think would be of interest and you'd like to be involved, send a message to activities@computinghistory.org.uk
