Eco Project Free Repair Cafe - Saturday 15th of August 2026
|
Description : Free slots available to the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project's repair cafe hosted at the Centre for Computing History!
What is a repair cafe? Repair cafes are free community events promoting sustainability through repairing items instead of replacing them. These events are supported by a team of experienced volunteer repairers who can fix items varying from tech, household appliances, textiles, bikes and woodwork. They also can sharpen tools and other items for you. There will also be free refreshments available for visitors and volunteers. The aim of a repair cafe is to not only fix your items but also teach you valuable skills by sitting down one on one with the repairer to share advice for the future. Repair cafes are learning opportunities so please feel free to ask questions and make the most of the experience! How to book your item for the repair cafe: If you have an item at home that needs fixing, fill in the form below and the museum's eco project coordinator will be in contact with you by email to confirm your place: https://forms.gle/iJ1Cm2x5k1MzAdT59 Please note that the museum will not accept items that have not been prebooked. Please fill in the form for each item you wish to bring. We will prioritise one item per person, however, if there is space for another item we will inform you by email closer to the date of the event. Please do not bring two items if you have not received a confirmation email that we have the capacity to fix them. Repair cafes are designed for the community and we encourage you to bring a friend or family member with you to explore the museum whilst you get your item fixed. Please book your free tickets on this website as well so that we can monitor predicted numbers of attendees. What if your item can't be fixed? The Centre for Computing History's repair cafe will also have an e-waste bin available on the day incase your item can't be fixed. Previously we have helped save 123kg of e-waste from going to landfill by supplying the community with an accessible e-waste bin! If you have any other tech items which you know have reached the end of their life please feel free to bring them along and put them in our e-waste bin. The project is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, run by the Museums Association. The exciting initiative will engage the local community in exploring the environmental and social impacts of the tech boom. To make this event as accessible as possible please consider donating to the museum as part of your visit.
Remember - All proceeds go to support our Computing Museum! |
