Released in November 2005, the Microsoft  Xbox 360 was the successor to the original Xbox and represented Microsoft's second generation home games console. It competed directly with Sony's Play Station 3 and Nintendo's Wii during the seventh generation of video game consoles.

The Xbox 360 introduced a powerful multi-core processor, high-definition gaming, integrated Xbox Live online services, wireless controllers, downloadable digital content, and an extensive multimedia platform. It played a major role in establishing online console gaming as a mainstream experience.

The Xbox 360 became one of the most successful video game consoles ever produced selling over 84 million units worldwide during its lifetime.

It was among the first consoles to make broadband online gaming a central feature through Xbox Live, allowing players to compete, communicate and purchase digital games and downloadable content.
