Here are some case studies of people who have exciting
careers in the tech industries.
Tech is for everyone so almost any school subject can lead to careers like these.
| Julieta, Data Visualiser |
I was interested in health and caring and I now write algorithms that help people view health data and statistics in ways that make sense to them. At first, I didn’t think I had a creative job but now I realise that I need to know how to explain complex concepts to people who know nothing about computers or data and that’s quite creative! |
| Ishaan, Programmer | I always wanted to become a programmer and I always enjoyed Computer Science at school. I learnt the basics there but then taught myself. Good code is a work of art but it takes practice. I now work for a small company developing apps for mobile phones and tablets and I work from home. |
| Harry, Animator | Art is my thing and I’m now a computer animator and games designer. I love art and the role it plays in gaming, from designing characters and landscapes to creating cover art. Shapes, colours and faces make players feel different emotions and I enjoy working out how players will interact with my designs. Will they be scared of a character or happy in a room? It’s about problem-solving and being part of a team. |
| Maya, Composer | I’ve always loved telling stories and I’ve always loved music. My career lets me do both! I compose music for games and the sounds I create help move the game’s story along and they add drama. People think the music is added on at the end of creating a game, but it isn’t. It’s a key part of games development. |
| Lily, Software Engineer | I studied languages (German & History) and ended up working in software. I spend my time thinking about language and words that will make sense to the people using the software my company makes. I like keeping up with how fast things change, and it is a fun, relaxed environment to work in. I get to use my love of language in a way that makes a difference to the human experience of tech. |
| Siti, Engineer | I love Maths and I grew up fixing all the toys my sister broke! I think I was always going to be an engineer. I now help design circuits for Bluetooth devices. Previously I taught Maths in a university but now I travel the world. Engineering is a great mix of logical thinking and creativity. |
| Martin, Electronics Engineer | When I was young I coded successful computer games, but in the early 80s, game coding wasn't a serious career option! An electronics degree led to a job developing radar equipment for aircraft and ships, but after 8 years I wanted a new challenge. I went back to uni to research using radio frequency detectors to diagnose potential faults in high voltage equipment and invented a method which is now used worldwide! I earned a PhD and even became a Professor of High Voltage Technologies. These days I use my expertise to advise clients all over the world. |
Some of these careers feature on a poster we give to schools when they visit the museum.
