Part of the Ferranti Atlas Cardreader control panel from the Manchester University Atlas computer. The Ferranti Atlas computer is one of the two or three most powerful machines in the world today. It marks the culmination of a long and fruitful collaboration between Ferranti Ltd and the Department of Electrical Engineering at Manchester University. This joint effort began with the construction of the Ferranti Mark I computer, which was the first stored program digital computer ever built for sale by a manufacturer. The collaboration has continued with the development of the well-known Ferranti Mercury computer, installed at Harwell, CERN, London University and sixteen other locations.
