The Olivetti EO Personal Communicator 440 is an early tablet from Eo, Inc that was released in April 1993. It features the AT&T Hobbit RISC-based processor running at 20 MHz, 4 MByte of RAM, a 10Mb storage card, and a built-in modem. The touch screen is a high contrast, 110 dpi reflective LCD, 640 x 480 pixel resolution, screen size 5.9-inch x 4.3-inch.It was advertised as being "the industry's first fully integrated communications devices that combine the power of cellular phones, fax machines, and personal computers." It was similar to a large personal digital assistant with wireless communications and competed against the Apple Newton.

The unit was later produced in conjunction with the Frog design, Matsushita, Olivetti and Marubeni corporations. This example in our collection has the Olivetti name on it. Eo, Inc was a hardware spin-out from GO, and both were later acquired by At&T. Between 1991 and 1993 EO Computer Ltd was based in the old Torch Computers building in Great Shelford near Cambridge in the UK. Dr. Herman Hauser was Co-Chairman of the company.

The EO Personal Communicator came with the following bundled applications:

  • Pensoft Personal Perspective
  • GO Mail
  • GO FAX
  • GO's PenTOPS and PenCentral
  • EO Phone
  • GO MiniNote
  • EO Calc
  • EO Lock
  • EO Sound
