From The New York Times, October 3, 1989: "The 1100 FD, which will cost $999 when it reaches the company's Radio Shack stores in late November, weighs 6.4 pounds. That makes it identical in price and weight to the Toshiba T1000, which has been the standard for lightweight MS-DOS computers. Tandy's new computer appears to have some advantages over the T1000, especially in screen size and built-in software.

The 1100 FD is likely to appeal to users of desktop systems who have flirted with the idea of getting a portable for occasional trips away from the desk, but who have balked at the high cost and high weight of laptops. Now that there is a lightweight machine available at the neighborhood Radio Shack store for less than $1,000, especially one that is not heavy, exotic or miniaturized past the point of really easy viewing, more people may buy a second machine to take along.

The Tandy screen is full size, a significant advantage over the squeezed displays with tiny letters or distorted graphics used by most other lightweight systems; an exception is the NEC Ultralite's impressive display."
