A redesign of the original Spectrum by 1984 was long overdue, planning started in June of that year, and after a very short development spell it was released in October the same year.

This 48 KB Spectrum (development code-name TB) introduced a new QL-style enclosure with a much needed injection-moulded keyboard and a reset button, retailing for £179.95. Early on, the machine outsold the rubber-key model 2:1; however, early on some retailers reported very high failure rates, mostly with the new keys which could fall out if the machine was turned upside down.

The new design was also backed by a very expensive advertisement campaign, which showed the original rubber key machine being transformed on a conveyor belt into the new case.

As well as the new keys, a few tweeks to the layout were implemented, the space key was moved from the right to the bottom, and new cursor keys were either side of that.

Also two folding legs were put on the underside to lift the machine up to a more comfortable position to type.

The rear of the machine was unchanged from the previous model, with aerial out, the I/O expansion and the power socket.

The original Spectrum could be upgraded to the new case, either by a kit, or by sending it to Sinclair Research for the work to be done.
