IBM releases the System 360 range of commercial computers

On the 7th April 1964, IBM announced its new System 360 range of commercial computers.

The computing industry of the time was very fragmented. Different machines were mostly incompatible with each other, even models from the same manufacturer. IBM's System 360 range was designed to address this problem. The same program could run on any computer in the System 360 range.

Other innovations provided by the System 360 range were improved upgrade-ability and magnetic tape drives.
