The original monochrome Maximite was designed as a hobby kit, and was introduced in a three-part article in Silicon Chip magazine in autumn of 2011 by Australian designer Geoff Graham. It was followed by the Colour Maximite, which was featured in the September 2012 Issue of Silicon Chip Magazine.

The Maximite works with a standard VGA monitor and PC compatible keyboard and because it has its own built in SD memory card and BASIC language you need nothing more to start writing and running BASIC programs. The Maximite also has also 20 input/output lines which can be used to control and monitor external electrical systems.
