Apple II The DOS Manual for DOS 3.3 had two primary functions. The first is to teach you how to use the DOS (Disk Operating System) : the Chapters of the manual use examples to accompany explanations of how the various DOS commands work. The second function of the manual is to serve as a reference guide to DOS. The Appendices, Quick Reference Card, and the Indices were planned with this function in mind. To use an Apple Disk II, you need an Apple II computer with at least 16K of memory — but 32K is recommended, since the 16K system allows little memory space to store programs. In fact, the MUFFIN program and the FID program on your System Master Diskette need 32K of memory to run. For using Apple Disk II with Applesoft on cassette tape or on diskette, your computer must have at least 32K of memory.

Apple II DOS was a family of disk operating systems for the Apple II series. It was superseded by ProDOS in 1983. Apple DOS has three major releases: DOS 3.1, DOS 3.2, and DOS 3.3; each one of these three releases was followed by a second, minor "bug-fix" release, but only in the case of Apple DOS 3.2 did that minor release receive its own version number.
The evolution of DOS:
DOS 3 - 29 June 1978
DOS 3.1 - 20 July 1978  .... for Disk II
DOS 3.2 - 16 February 1979  .... long list of changes
DOS 3.2.1 - 31 July 1979  .... maintenance release
DOS 3.3 - 25 August 1980 ... hardware/software upgrade
DOS 3.3 - 1 January 1983  .... maintenance release
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak designed the Disk II controller but  Steve Jobs decided to outsource the DOS development. Digital Research's CP/M was considered, but Wozniak wanted an to use operating system. On 10 April 1978 Apple  a $13,000 contract was agreed with Shepardson Microsystems to write a DOS in 35 days. Apple provided detailed specifications, and Apploid Randy Wigginton worked closely with Shepardson's Paul Laughton who coded DOS with punched cards on a minicomputer.
Apple DOS 1 and 2 were development versions, Apple DOS 3.0, a renamed issue of version 2.8, was never publicly released due to bugs. Apple published no official documentation until release 3.2.
The Package should include: 1) Disk drive; 2) Controller Card; 3) A flat ribbon cable; 4) A "SYSTEM MASTER" disk; 5) A "BASICS" disk; 6) "The DOS Manual"
2 Disk 5.25 and "The DOS Manual" only are included.
