This teletext decoder unit was manufactured by Nufax Limited, a Bristol-based company. The device was designed to convert a standard television set into one capable of receiving Ceefax and Oracle, the two main teletext services broadcast in the UK during that era.

Teletext was a revolutionary broadcast information system introduced in the 1970s, allowing pages of text-based news, weather, TV listings, and subtitles to be transmitted within the television signal. Ceefax (by the BBC) and Oracle (by ITV and Channel 4) provided early forms of interactive information services before the rise of the internet. This decoder allowed viewers without built-in teletext capability to access this content.

In addition to displaying teletext pages, the Nufax unit could decode and display television subtitles embedded in the broadcast signal. It also supported video recordings of programmes broadcast with teletext subtitles, making it possible to view subtitled content during playback.

The unit was supplied with a cordless remote control keypad.

The model in the museum’s collection has the serial number 2285.
