Mortal Kombat is a one-on-one fighter ported from the arcade game by Midway.  It featured digitised actors as sprites and was famous for its gore and "Fatalities"- special moves triggered at the end of a fight that saw the loser being dispatched in a number of gruesome ways.

There would be numerous sequels and some unsuccessful spin-off games. Mortal Kombat is still going to this day.
