Android watches go up for preorder
25th June 2014 Google annonced the first smart watches powered by the Android Wear Operating System. The first 2 watches to offer support are the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live. Android wear was developed because, as quoted by Steffen Sorrell, "The problem with smartwatches so far has been that the sector hasn't quite decided what it wants to be - is it a phone on your wrist or an accessory device, once you introduce Android Wear, it will hopefully provide a more focused case for what the devices are capable of. And that's a direction that could invigorate the market." The platform will be open for 3rd party development. All the apps are downloaded when the watch is connected to a phone, this allows the wearer to control music, maps and time without having to take their phone out of their pocket.
