Apple iPhone

Apple iPhone

First generation model of the 4GB Apple iPhone, model number A1203.

The iPhone was the first smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It was announced on 9th January 2007, and was released in the United States on 29th June 2007. It was later released in the UK and other European markets in November 2007. In the UK the iPhone cost £269 and the minimum monthly contract with O2 was £35.

The release of the iPhone in 2007 shook the smartphone market as it was aimed at the general public. When released, Apple used the slogan "Apple reinvents the phone" to promote it. Its design was very different to other smartphones available at the time, with no keyboard and a touchscreen that controlled everything. It featured quad-band GSM cellular connectivity with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfer.

On June 9, 2008, Apple announced its successor, the iPhone 3G. After this announcement, the first-generation iPhone became referred to by some sources as the iPhone 2G due to the fact that it was the only iPhone to ship with the 2G-speed EDGE network.
