1965 Commodore was founded by Jack Tramiel, an autocratic Polish-born Canadian who had survived the German Nazi concentration camps of World War II. Tramiel incorporated Commodore on October 10, 1958, as the Commodore Portable Typewriter Co., Ltd., a Canadian corporation that Forbes referred to as "a typewriter repair shop in the Bronx."
