60496 LEO I Power Supply During Construction

Description of Photograph

Photograph of the partially-constructed switchboard/power supply - 'work in progress' on LEO I, dated 20 June 1950.

Research comments: This is an early photograph of the switchboard for LEO I. The completed power installation/switchboard can be seen in later photos, although part of the power supply is located in the Cadby Hall basement. Also later, a false floor is laid in the room with sections that could be raised to inspect the wiring underneath. These early photos give a real sense of the fact that Lyons had to build LEO; they created, or rather 'hacked' to use a modern term, almost everything involved in creating their calculator. (LM)
