Fingers Crossed for 2021 ...

Calculating the wages for the staff of J Lyons and Co

Description of Photograph

Photograph dated 1953 by Bert Hardy/Picture Post/Hulton Archive/Getty Images. The Getty caption states 'Calculating the wages for the staff of J Lyons and Co using an electronic calculator which looks just like a typewriter. The machine produces the information punched out on to a tape. Original Publication: Picture Post - 7580 - Electronic Brain - unpub.'

Judging by the shelving structure behind the woman, we believe this photograph may have been taken in the data prep area of the calculator (LEO 1) room at Cadby Hall. Photograph 79 in our LEO photo app (also taken in 1953) shows the same structure on the wall, entitled LEO Timetable.
