61847 St Mary's College gateway experimental workshop (1949)

Description of Photograph

Digital copy of a photograph of one of the workshops at Cadby Hall where LEO I was developed prior to installation in WX block.

Caption:  'Part of one of 2 rooms over gateway to St Mary's College, part of Cadby Hall, where original experiments leading to LEO I designs were performed. 1949.  [ms] (Original Workshop)'

Research comments: This is one of the earliest photographs from the development of the first LEO computer. The LEO Chronicle states that on 8th March 1949 "a  small workshop is set up in the lodge of St. Mary's College to prepare experimental circuits.". This is likely a photograph of that workshop. Circuit diagrams can be seen pinned on the walls. (LM)
