Tec Toy were founded in Brazil 1987, and were licensed by Sega to produce their hardware within Brazil. For Sega, licensing Tectoy to manufacture their consoles within Brazil meant they avoided the high import charges on products moving into the country. As well as producing toys and hardware, Tectoy also ported and translated Sega games, often adapting and reskinning games to represent Brazillian characters. They have been trading with Tectoy as one word since 2007.

Tectoy originated from ex-staff of Sharp - Daniel Dazcal left Sharp to found Tectoy in 1987, and Stefano Arnhold soon followed, and is now the current head of Tectoy.

Their first Sega product was the Tectoy Master System in 1989, which had already been released by Sega in North America in 1986.

The Mega Drive was released by Tec Toy in 1990, just 1 year after its USA release, and just one year after Tectoy’s own Master System. They also produced their own versions of the Game Gear, Saturn, and even the Pico.

Many Master System ports of Game Gear games were created by Tectoy for the Brazilian market, as the Master System was more popular than the Game Gear there.

Several exclusive titles including a Woody Woodpecker game were developed and released by Tectoy for Master System & Mega Drive in Brazil only. They also uniquely backwards-ported games like Duke Nukem 3D to Mega Drive and Street Fighter II to Master System in 1997. Tectoy translated the Carmen Sandiego and Phantasy Star games into Portuguese and released them on their Sega systems. The in-house developments were remarkable as it was so late in the Mega Drive’s lifetime, that Sega could no longer provide dev kits.

Tectoy also manufactured Tiger’s LCD handhelds under their own name, and the V-Tech Smart Start Computer as Pense Bem (Think Well), amongst other familiar products. Tectoy still make plug and play consoles to this day.

Similarly to Tectoy, Playtronic represented Nintendo in Brazil.
