From the preface:

"This document is based on the widely distributed VSAM Primer and Reference (G320-5774-1) by Ulrich Schwenk of IBM Germany. With the advent of VSE/VSAM in DOS/VSE and the Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF) of Data Facility Extended Facility (DFEF) Program Product in the MVS environment, the VSAM Primer document no longer reflects the current status of VSAM.

• This document is a major revision of the VSAM Primer and is written with the Integrated Catalog Facility in mind. Several chapters have been added specifically for the ICF because of its importance.
• All references to SCPs other than MVS have been removed from the document .
• The document is updated with 3375 and 3380 information whenever practical.
• Many sections on VSAM structure and record management, as well as most of the related figures are preserved in its original form. Moreover, the objective of the original document which was designed for ease of use, is observed throughout this document.
• In addition to the ICF catalog, DFEF also contains several enhancements to VSAM record management. Many of these record management functions are used by subsystems such as IMS/VS. They are considered to be advanced functions and are not covered in this document."
