Playstation 2 Released in Europe

Sony Release the Playstation 2
After the huge success of the first console, the anticipation for the new machine was enormous, despite having Sega's Dreamcast release a year earlier, they were able to persuade most of their users to wait for the new machine, by promising almost full backwards compatibility with the first machine.
The other masterstroke was making the drive in the machine a DVD drive, which was very appealing to many people. A great deal of people list the PS2 as their first DVD player. In reality it was not a great player, but combined with the return of familiar franchises like Ridge Racer and almost total third party support, this would become the most successful console of all time.
