Nintendo releases the Game Boy

The Nintendo Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld game console developed by Nintendo. It was created by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo's Research and Development — the same staff who had designed the Game & Watch series as well as several popular games for the NES.

The Game Boy was based around an 8-bit Z80 processor. It had a monochrome LCD display and 4-channel stereo sound.

Original Game Boy consoles were bundled with the puzzle game Tetris, an addictive game developed in 1985 by Russian mathematician Alexey Pazhitnov.

Nintendo released the Game Boy in Japan on 21st April 1989, in North America in August 1989, and in Europe in 1990.
