This is a body worn computer for soldiers consisting of a belt holding the computer and batteries and a sophisticated helmet that contains all the audio visual elements. The following information is from the donor, Paul Gee. In 2000 I worked for Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) at Fort Halstead in Sevenoaks, Kent. My primary project at the time was the Future Infantry Soldier Technology (FIST) programme where we were developing man-mounted computer system to enhance military effectiveness. More info here https://www.army-technology.com/projects/fist/?cf-view I worked on the programme for 6 years and when I took over the development lead I was tasked with designing a R&D system using common of the shelf equiptment to create a man mounted computer system. The system needed to provide a platform which allowed us to run a series of experimental trails to evaluate different requirements would improve the operational effectiveness of a soldier. The 2nd generation FIST system was based on a Xybernaut MA IV belt wearable PC with tablet display, a Sony Glasstron head mounted display, a Satel Radio modem for wireless communications, a SiRF III GPS for positioning, Lecica laser range finding binoculars. Experiments would take place on the plains of Larkhill in Dorset or in Cyprus running Company level trails with up to 120 personal. From these trails a set of requirements would be given to industry to tender against for further FIST trails. Later R&D moved to Compaq iPaqs with the majority of our work was carried out on ARM based PC104 boards, reducing the size and weight so it could be fitted in a SA80 rifle stock. Unfortunately over the years all the equiptment has been damaged and destroyed. In 1999 before I took over developing the hardware and software for the programme, Pilkington Optronics developed a bespoke computer for the early trails called the FIST 2000 Technology Demonstrator (TD). The complete system consisted of a torso control unit, battery pack, head mounted display unit, head mounted night vision image camera, weapon mounted camera and weapon mount control unit. I've recently been given probably the last FIST 2000 TD kit in existence. The system was passed to me as a part of a final clear out of old equiptment by QinetiQ. The FIST TD is not complete and consists of a helmet with the head mounted display, head mounted camera, torso control unit and a battery holder unit. There is also the user manual. I have sourced a 12v Molicell ME202BB style battery which allowed me to power up the system (alas no charger but can be jury-rigged to charge). The system beeps but nothing displays in the head up display or via the ancillary display cable, someone more technical may be able to diagnose the problem. The system and its associated documentation are not declassified despite the Restricted classification due to the 20 year rule of the Public Records Act 1958 which was amended in 2013.
