Mastering Interpreters and Compilers
This clear and comprehensive introduction to compilers and interpreters emphasises the practical side of the art. It moves gradually from the idea of a 'wedge' in the BBC computer's Operating System, to a simple interpreter, a simple graphics language, threaded interpretive languages (including FORTH) and, finally, a stand-alone compiler. Listings of the implementations are given. This book will give anyone with a good knowledge of assembly language the foundation on which to build an interpreter or compiler of their own.
Bruce Smith has written sixteen books on computing, fourteen of which have dealt with the BBC Computer range. He is currently technical editor of Acorn User magazine.

Introducing the BBC Micro
The BBC Microcomputer is one of the best micros on the market and arguable the most worthwhile investment for ambitious beginners. It is also particularly suitable for family use because very many children already have access to a BBC Microcomputer at school, where it is one of the most popular machines.
The machine, however, is complex. It presents and impressive array of facilities, yet the same sophistication that appeals to experts can also appear daunting to beginners. The large size of the manual can also make it difficult for beginners to master the essentials quickly.
This book starts at the very beginning with setting up the machine. It guides the reader, step-by-step, through the difficult early stages until he is able to write his own programs with confidence, achieve his own special effects, and is all set to exploit the full potential of this superb micro.

Using the BBC Micro in Education
The BBC Micro is an immensely powerful computer. And its potential for assisting in education is enormous. But the means of tapping that potential are not immediately obvious.
In this detailed work, experienced teacher Don Thorpe discusses the role the BBC Microcomputer could occupy in your teaching activities. He compare its possibilities with those of other, more traditional, teaching aids, and outline specific areas of application in which the computer has no rival.

Sensing & Control Projects for the BBC
The designers of the BBC microcomputer included a number of sockets to allow the computer to receive signals from and send signals to the outside world. Yet the majority of owners of the BBC micro have only used the cassette and TV/RGB sockets at the back of the computer and the printer and disc drive plugs underneath.
This book introduces ways of using the ANALOGUE IN socket and the USER PORT to interface the computer with its environment. The projects are fully explained in non-technical language at every stage and ideas are given for additional experiments.

The Legacy of the BBC Micro - Effecting Change in the UK's Cultures of Computing
This report from May 2012 examines the legacy of the BBC Micro and the Computer Literacy Project (which the BBC Micro accompanied). It also discusses what lessons can be learned from the project, how those could be applied at the time of publication (May 2012), and whether a second 'Computer Literacy Project' is needed.
The report is authored by Dr Tilly Blyth, Keeper of Technologies and Engineering at the Science Museum, and was published by Nesta, a UK charity focused on innovation in business, technology and more.

Computing for all the Family with a BBC Computer
"Tony Noble (a Headmaster in Northamptonshire), has taught computing to himself, his family, and the children at his school; so there is no one better placed to write this, THE definitive computer book for either school or home use. The book begins with an introduction to the uses of microcomputers then takes you through about 50 short, simple, easy-to-follow steps that take you from turning on the computer to advanced BASIC programming. These have been thoroughly tested in schools with outstanding success - even with adults they have proved more effective, simpler, and more interesting than reading the manuals.
After this, there is a section of hints and tips for better programming and then listings and detailed explanations of highly motivating ADVENTURE- style educational programs specially designed for younger people.
These include SMUGGLERS, SAURUS ISLAND, ZOO HUNT and GALACTIC INVASION.
Other programs concerned with data collection and graphics are also presented, to link in with the programming steps.
Finally, there is a large collection of 25 instructional programs, with many variations, designed to teach such skills as vowel usage, spelling, arithmetic, multiplication tables, area concepts, and geography. All these programs have been tried and tested in both school and home environments.
Strongly recommended for parents wishing to reinforce the school computer experience in the more relaxed home environment."
