Nintendo releases the Famicom in Japan

On 15th July 1983, Nintendo released its 8-bit home video console the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan. The Famicom was later redesigned and sold as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in other parts of the world.

The Famicom and NES were the first to introduce the business model of allowing other companies to develop games for the platform.

Taken together, the Famicom and NES were the best selling gaming console of its time. By March 2014, Nintendo reported sales of 61.91 million units worldwide alongside 500 million software units.

The console was succeeded by the Super Famicom or the SNES.
