Hellcats over the Pacific was a 3D flight simulator computer game for the Apple Macintosh computer. It was written by Parsoft Interactive and released by Graphic Simulations in 1991. Hellcats was one of the first 3D games to be able to drive a 640 x 480 x 8-bit display at reasonable frame rates, the graphics engine was combined with a simple Mac interface and set of randomized missions. It featured the F6F Hellcat aircraft in a series of fictional missions during 1943's Guadalcanal Campaign. Eric Parker's interest in flight simulators meant that he worked at home and chose to target the Apple Macintosh, as it was the only machine on the mass market at the time that commonly featured the ability to run at reasonably high resolutions, at that time 640 x 480 or higher. The game engine was built within a shell using the basic Mac UI, in contrast to most games that have their own UI built inside the game engine. F/A-18 Hornet was a modern jet fighter simulation of the Navy and Marine Corps F-18A built by McDonnell Aircraft Company. Both version 1.0 and 2.0 disks are included. Platform: Apple Macintosh with 68020 includes LC, any Mac II, SE/30, Classic II, Powerbooks 140 and 170 and Quadra 2Mb RAM Mac OS System 6.x or later Application Software (AS:) Games Version: 1991
