AMD, Advanced Micro Devices, is founded

AMD, Advanced Micro Devices, was founded on 1st May 1969 by a group of former executives from Fairchild Semiconductor.

The company began as a producer of logic chips, and soon started producing RAM chips.

AMD produced its first processor in 1975, the Am9000 a reverse-engineered clone of the Intel 8080.

AMD went on to become one of the leading processor manufacturers of the world, producing the very successful Athlon and Opteron processors in the 2000s.
