IBM announces the Model 650 computer
2nd July 1953
On 2nd July 1953, IBM announced its 650 series of computers.
The machine was IBM's first mass-produced commercial business computer. Over 2,000 units were eventually sold, despite the original market forecast estimating that only 50 machines would be installed.
The IBM 650 used vacuum-tube logic. It stored information on a rotating magnetic drum, and received it on programmed punch cards.
