Sam & Max Hit the Road was the first video game for Steve Purcell's comic book duo. As the 'Freelance Police', the player guides the pair across the USA in the hope of tracking down a carnival's Bigfoot. Sam is directly controlled by the player, but can also 'use' Max with some objects. Conversations can be directed by selecting an image representing the subject they want to speak about. Sam can also converse with Max for reassurance at any point during the game. This is one of the first games to employ both music and a full speech soundtrack. It also quite uniquely featured optional minigames that had no effect on the storyline or progress. The game references earlier LucasArts point-and-click adventures, for example the cashier at each of the 'Snuckey' locations strongly resembles Bernard from Maniac Mansion. Similarly, a portrait resembling Max can be spotted in a location in Day of the Tentacle (also known as Maniac Mansion II) Sam & Max Hit the Road was launched for only MS-DOS and Macintosh, and the game didn't receive a Windows release until much later. A critically-acclaimed LucasArts classic.
