Wau Holland starts Chaos Computer Club, the first computer hacker group
12th September 1981
Wau Holland, a German security analyst, founds the white-hat hacking group on 12th September 1981, in West Berlin.
The Chaos Computer Club is now the largest and oldest hacking group with over 7000 members worldwide. They focus on exposing government security flaws and educating people on computer security.
The hacker group first made headlines when members hacked the German Bildschirmtext (BTX), a videotex system. During the attack the hackers were able to transfer 134,000 Deutschemarks into their bank accounts. They later returned the funds because they just wanted to prove the flaw in the system.
