Nintendo releases Wii

The Wii is a home video game console developed by Nintendo.

Nintendo released the Wii in North America on 19th November 2006, and the rest of the world in December 2006.

Nintendo's goal with the Wii was to open up gaming to a wider audience. After losing market share to the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox, rather than directly competing in a computational arms race, Nintendo wanted to find a different way of playing games.

The result was the Wii, which had small controller containing motion sensors. The machine was an instant hit. Even people who never or rarely played games could now have fun with video games, everyone from the very young to the elderly could enjoy the simple gameplay of the bundled Wii Sports game.

At launch, the Wii was priced at $249.99 which included the Wii console, a wireless Wii Remote controller, a Nunchuk controller, and a collection of five different Wii Sports games.
