Pokémon GO popularises Augmented Reality gaming

On 6th July 2016, Niantic released the mobile game Pokémon GO in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Releases in most other territories followed throughout 2016.

Pokémon GO is credited with popularising Augmented Reality gaming. Combining GPS mapping, camera video, and computer-generated imagery, Pokémon GO blends the real and imaginary worlds. The game allows players to catch virtual Pokémon creatures from real-world locations.

Pokémon GO was one of the most popular mobile apps of 2016, reaching over 500 million worldwide downloads by the end of the year.
