Mary Lee Berners-Lee was a British mathematician and computer scientist who worked for Ferranti as a programmer in the early 1950s. She developed programs for Manchester University's series of Ferranti Mark I computers. 

She was passionate about women's rights well before the Equal Pay Act of the 1970s. When the female programmers at Ferranti discovered that their male colleagues were being paid more than they were for the same work Mary Lee led a successful negotiation for equal pay for all programmers.

In 1953, Mary Lee met Conway Berners-Lee, a colleague at Ferranti and they went on to marry. Their eldest son is Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited with inventing the world wide web.

Mary Lee Berners-Lee died on November 29th 2017, aged 93.
